Why Interventional Neuropsychiatry?

Muthu Brain Medicine is a specialty psychiatric practice built around the modern neurocircuit model of the brain. We care for patients whose conditions sit at the intersection of neurology and psychiatry, and for patients whose symptoms have not fully responded to conventional care.

Anatomical illustration of a human brain viewed from above with seven large-scale neural networks overlaid at their canonical cortical and subcortical locations.
  • Default Mode
  • Salience
  • Attention
  • Negative Affect — Sad
  • Negative Affect — Threat
  • Positive Affect
  • Cognitive Control
  • All Neurocircuits
Seven Canonical Circuits

A unified map of the brain, tailored to each patient.

Modern neuroscience organizes the brain into large-scale networks that regulate attention, mood, threat, reward, and cognitive control. We use circuit-based analyses to conceptualize where symptoms form, and to choose the pharmacologic and neuromodulation strategies most likely to modify the right circuit.

WHO WE SEE

Conditions we treat

Traumatic Brain Injury

Dr. Muthu has three years of experience treating the neuropsychiatric sequelae of concussion, mild to severe TBI, and chronic post-concussive syndrome via a telecare model.

Post-Stroke Depression

Mood and cognitive care after cerebrovascular events, including depression, apathy & emotional dysregulation.

Movement Disorders

Psychiatric sequelae of Parkinson's, Huntington's, and related neurodegenerative conditions.

Dementia + Psychiatric Comorbidity

Integrated care for behavioral and mood symptoms across the cognitive decline spectrum.

HOW WE TREAT

A neurocircuit framework, two therapeutic arms

Advanced psychopharmacology

Precision-sequenced medication selection & pharmacogenomic-guided optimization, matched to the circuits driving your symptoms, not just the diagnosis.  Paired with rigorous measurement-based care and a deprescribing-first philosophy that prioritizes the minimum effective regimen for your brain.

Neuromodulation

TMS, ketamine, ProlivRx, tDCS, neurofeedback, eVNS, Modius Spero & eTNS: modalities selected and targeted to the circuits underlying your symptoms, with at-home neuromodulation options to extend care between visits.  For patients who have exhausted non-invasive options, we evaluate candidacy for surgical neuromodulation (VNS & DBS) and coordinate referrals through our network of neurosurgical teams.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

Match the biology. Restore the circuit. Heal the brain.

Neurocircuit framework

We define disease and formulate treatment through modern circuit-based neuroscience, not symptom checklists alone.

Matched to your biology

Every care plan is personalized, built around your history, physiology, and measurable response to treatment.

Neuroplasticity optimization

We optimize sleep, nutrition, exercise, and micronutrient levels to fully harness the neuroplasticity window opened by treatment.
